Why We're Going "Smartphone free" for Kids at the Community Center

We’ve all noticed how much smartphones have become a part of daily life, especially for kids. While these devices keep us connected, they’re also changing how children experience the world. Activities like playing outside, reading, spending time with family, or simply hanging out with friends are happening less and less. Instead, it’s becoming all too common to see kids with their heads down, glued to their phones—whether at social events or just during hangouts.

There’s growing concern around the impact of smartphones on young minds. Studies are showing strong links between heavy social media use and rising mental health challenges among youth.

That’s why we’re introducing a new “no smartphones” policy for kids younger than 8th grade at our community programs. The goal is simple: help children focus on the joys of real-life connections, play, and creativity. We hope you'll support us helping our kids unplug during their early years.

What the DCP is Doing

At Summit Community Center and through our programs, we invite you to help us build a healthy community culture for our kids. We are encouraging collectively delaying internet-based smartphones for kids under 8th grade, while thoughtfully managing the use of these devices for those who already have them.

  • Smartphones (with access to internet and social media) will not be permitted to be used during any of our recreation programs.
  • Parents are strongly encouraged to keep children's phones at home while they are at DCP programs.
  • If phones must be brought, we will be installing a phone locker that phones will be required to be stored in while at a DCP program.
  • Coaches and instructors will have phone numbers of all participant parents if communication is required.
  • Coaches and instructors will ensure that phones are left at home or in a locker while participating in our programs.
  • The telephone at the front desk will accessible to all children to make calls.

Non-smartphone options will be permitted, as will "smart watches" as means of communication. A list of smartphone alternatives can be found here. Phones with internet apps or social media will NOT be permitted while participating in Community Center activities.

We can be proactive and play a part in breaking the smartphone addiction. Even if it’s just for the time they’re at the Community Center - let them enjoy being kids!
